In the note watchmaking luxury and evolution since the 70s we tell you a story of resistance innovation renaissance and how high-end watches continue to set the pace of time.

The history of luxury watchmaking over the last 50 years is that of a sector that has been able to reinvent itself in the face of every threat, transforming challenges into opportunities.

From the quartz crisis in the 1970s to the current rise of mechanical watches as a symbol of identity, the sector has undergone a fascinating evolution.

Luxury watchmaking and evolution since the 1970s

The 1970s and the great shake-up

In the 1970s, the Swiss watch industry experienced its greatest crisis, the irruption of quartz watches, especially from Japan with brands such as Seiko.

These new watches were much cheaper, more accurate and easier to produce. Between 1970 and 1983, the Swiss industry lost about two-thirds of its jobs and many historic brands closed their doors or were acquired.

However, this dark period was not the end of luxury watchmaking, but the beginning of its transformation. Some houses decided to bet on the emotional, artisanal and symbolic value of mechanical watchmaking against mass production.

This approach marked the beginning of a new positioning of the watch as a luxury object and not only as a functional instrument.

80's and 90's resurgence with strategy

During the 1980s, the arrival of the Swatch group changed the rules of the game.

With a combination of affordable quartz watches and the revival of high-end brands such as Omega or Blancpain, confidence in the Swiss industry was rebuilt.

Luxury watchmaking began to be associated with exclusivity, history and prestige, attracting a new type of more demanding and emotional consumer.

In the 1990s, the rise of emerging markets, especially Asia and the Middle East, offered brands a new clientele eager to acquire status symbols.

Brands such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet or Vacheron Constantin reinforced their heritage identity, while young or revalued firms began to propose more daring designs.

21st century consolidation and sophistication

Since 2000, luxury watchmaking has experienced an unprecedented consolidation. The industry has been able to combine tradition and technology, with advances in materials, ceramics, carbon, titanium, increasingly complex technical complications and a careful storytelling.

The advent of the smartwatch in the 2010s posed no real threat to mechanical luxury.

On the contrary, it reinforced the difference between the two worlds: while a smartwatch is useful, a luxury watch is timeless. The demand for high-end mechanical parts increased, and with it, the interest in Swiss craftsmanship.

According to data from the Fédération de l'industrie horlogère suisse or FH, Swiss luxury watch exports exceeded CHF 24 billion in 2023, with sustained growth in the high-end segment +10.3%.

This confirms that luxury watchmaking not only resists, but also leads in terms of turnover.

2020 to 2025 towards a more conscious luxury

After 2020, the sector has undergone a process of introspection. Today's customer values authenticity, material origin, sustainability and experience.

Personalization and emotional connection are now key. Boutique brands and independent firms have gained ground, offering unique products for a sophisticated clientele.

In this new scenario, the watch is revalued as an object of legacy, personal expression and inheritance. It is no longer about ostentation, but about coherence: choosing a piece that represents you.
